Chapter Seven - Leave A Lasting Legacy

learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light (Ma 11:29-30). But when I leave my sin and myself at the cross, the seed of selfishness dies and what springs forth in its place is a life of unspeakable peace that can only be understood by experience. The life that springs forth is the life of Jesus.

What you feed grows. If I feed the flesh, then my selfishness grows. If I feed the spirit, my spirit grows. And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it (Ma 10:38-39).

Faith is a rest, not a struggle! Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest (Ma 11:28). All I need to do is abide in Jesus. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing (Jo 15:5). My self is not dead. I am dead to my self! My self is still strong and living, but it no longer has power over me. I must daily take up my cross and follow Jesus. You see, the baton Joy passed on to me is the cross of Jesus.

A mentoring friendship is a win-win relationship. The benefactor and beneficiary mutually benefit. Life is made more meaningful for both. When Joy passes the baton to me, she sees that I am the better for it, with the fruits of her life alive and working in me, making her life even more worthwhile.

This happens for Joy every time she passes the baton or blessing to someone else who catches it. Living life principles that work is better than beating my head against the wall. The connectedness we share is the best part of all.

What Aunt Jen passed on to Hilary was the cross of Jesus. God knew Jen was the best fit for Hilary. Hilary wrote the following note to her Aunt Jen on Jen’s 50th birthday:
