Chapter Seven - Leave A Lasting Legacy

They found and filled the need in each other for deep and meaningful understanding, spiritual fulfillment and just comfortable camaraderie.

Sharing such similar experiences, Mary and Elizabeth had simpatico together, knowing how each other felt physically, emotionally and spiritually. Elizabeth was older and farther along in her pregnancy and was able to share life experiences and feelings that probably helped make the load lighter for a such a lonely young vulnerable girl. Together they shared meals, chores, dreams, expectations and all those little things about pregnancy that when shared, make the burden of pregnancy bearable. “And Mary remained with her [Elizabeth] for about three months and [then] returned to her [own] home.” (Luke1:56) In an age where women were treated like second class citizens and her husband had grounds for divorce having a wife pregnant not by him, Elizabeth’s mentoring helped Mary hold on to her life’s purpose in a way no one else could. They were together in this moment in time determining the destiny of mankind forever.

Silenced by Gabriel for his doublt, Elizabeth’s husband Zachariah must have had tremendous respect for Mary’s faith. “And there appeared to him an angel of the Lord, … and when Zachariah saw him he was troubled, and fear took possession of him…” (Luke 1:11,12) Mary’s response was radically different. “…the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee named Nazareth, To a girl never having been married and a virgin engaged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, a descendant of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. … But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled and disturbed and confused at what he said and kept revolving in her mind what such a greeting might mean…Then Mary said, Behold, I am the handmaiden of the Lord; let it be done to me according to what you have said.” (Luke 1:26,27,29,38)
