Chapter Two - Defining Moments

felt tired, insignificant, and overwhelmed. I reached the end of my rope, and it was a pivotal time. This defining moment revealed my purpose in such a wonderful way through Joy.

“I feel so miserable and awful!” I tearfully told Joy, words and emotions overflowing. She listened quietly with her heart and understood.

“It’s difficult being the wind under the wings,” Joy thoughtfully replied. That defining moment impacted my life forever and showed my worth as a person, not as an extension of someone else. He…brings out the wind from his storehouses (Je 51:16). What meant the most was understanding and receiving God’s love for me when I felt like an invisible, worthless wind.

Praise the LORD, O my soul! O LORD, my God, You are very great…rid[ing] on the wings of the wind, he makes winds his messengers…” (Ps 104:1-4). It gave meaning to the circumstances and feelings that followed. Joy accepted being the wind under wings in her capacity as a pastor’s wife. We both learned the wind can become a hurricane when necessary.

Her simple words validated my existence and enlightened everything in that moment. I wasn’t giving myself enough credit for taking care of my children and making our house a home. My role was just as vital as my husband’s.

The encouragement, love, and understanding she shared inspired me to make constructive choices about the situation and understand the learning curve that I was in. In choosing God’s way over my way, I was learning to let Him be my Higher Power instead of my husband. I was expecting Michael to fill a void in my heart, but Joy’s mentoring taught me that only God is capable of such Sovereignty.

Sometimes events in our past can be so overwhelming we cannot cope with them. God gives us these moments. Although the Lord gives you the bread of adversity and the water of affliction, your teachers will be hidden no more; with your own eyes you will see them. Whether
