Chapter Two - Defining Moments

This means by the very nature of your circumstances and because of Who God is, the things that have cost you the most will probably bring you the greatest reward.

Meeting Joy was a defining moment. It was a moment when I unconsciously made the choice that I was going to be her friend. This moment would change my life forever. I wanted a relationship with this outstanding person. Perhaps it was Jesus’ reflection in her life, although I didn’t see it that way at the time; I was still too immature. Not until I developed my own hindsight did I comprehensively see Joy for who she was and Whom she represented and reflected.

It is easy to misidentify our feelings, especially when we deal with the symptom and not the root. She was confident, and I was cocky. I thought I was confident, but I really had a lot of insecurity inside. Her quiet confidence coupled with her sharp mind made her fun to be with.

Joy was my friend first and then my mentor. We were kindred spirits [[keep this and not Napoleon Dynamite]] and never thought or considered the dimension of mentoring. It was the natural result of a deep and lasting relationship because we fulfilled each others’ needs.

“Let me tell you what I needed,” Joy shared with me. “I was so full of the things that God had helped me to understand. Not a lot of words that I wanted to say to you, but I just wanted to share with you… some kind of very special belonging to a real, wonderful person. I knew that you were wonderful. I felt in my spirit that God had great potential for you, but you didn’t know what it was.

“You were searching for it, and I needed to be there for you to help you stabilize your walk with God until that you reached out and touched something very wonderful. I didn’t know what that was, but God knew. God didn’t tell you as I don’t always tell people all the things I understand about their futures. I don’t want to say that I’m a clairvoyant. I don’t mean that.”
