Chapter Five - Make A Path; Leave A Trail

because they were weary and scattered, like sheep having no shepherd (Ma 9:36). Jesus   understands and knows how I feel.   Step One is the only step I can actually take. Steps two through twelve, God has to do

through me. In the rooms of recovery, I have learned this and incorporated new habits through working my program and sponsorship.

Recovery is such an important part of being unique because it gives us permission to individuate and be all who God meant us to be. I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you

(Jo 14:18). Jesus meets us in recovery. Recovery teaches us boundaries: where I end and another person begins. Defining moments help us draw boundaries around who we are.

Sponsorship is mentoring in recovery. As vital part of the 12-step program, we are encouraged to find someone who has been successfully working the program, and with whom we can identify and confide. This enables us to be accountable in a way that encourages our growth through this mentoring relationship. We are only as sick as our secrets, and unloading our secrets and our shame in a safe way is one of the greatest gifts in sponsorship. It is also one of the key reasons sponsorship works so well. It is a win-win relationship in a class by itself.

I improve faster with a sponsor. I grow stronger spiritually as a sponsor. Often my sponsor would see a unique gift in me that I was unable to see in myself. My friend, whom I sponsored, saw herself through completely different eyes than I did until she started accepting her good traits as well as her character defects. I saw her gifts the unique strengths she was oblivious to. What we feed grows, and in either capacity we are strengthening those principles that prevent us from sabotaging our own success.

What impels you? Defining moments determine our destiny by bringing to light and life those pre-destined gifts God gave you. They come to fruition through the experiences of life.
