Chapter Five - Make A Path; Leave A Trail

God births in each human being this feeling of greatness which becomes the foundation upon which dreams are built. It is not of us, and that is why it stays in our hearts.

Start with your epitaph. Start with the end in mind. How do you want to be remembered? I want my epitaph to read, “She was loving, kind, and wise.” This thought subconsciously precludes everything I think and do.

There is only one of you. None of us are alike. Mother Theresa is one of Joy’s heroes. Joy could not be like her–nor should she be. However, she can have that same spirit of love. It takes on the form of its possessor and will flow through a willing vessel like water in a pitcher.

She needs to be who she is, unique in how she has been shaped by the things in her life that have built into her compassion, concern, and caring for others.

She often wonders what prompted the good Samaritan who stopped and ministered to the man robbed and beaten. Could it have been the rejection from Israel he had felt as a Samaritan? What about the disciples when through their needs they rose to follow Jesus? They could never be Jesus, but they could have His Spirit.

I can never be Joy, but I can have a spirit like hers. Going from imitation to unique meant learning not to be and do what I perceived others expected of me, but to follow my heart and God’s will for me. God’s authentic love, working through her, filled my spirit so I might truly love and be whom God made me to be. Her life was an example for me to follow.

Learning has more to do with what is caught than taught. Just as I try to teach my children, so my mentor teaches me. “I can teach my children what I believe, but I reproduce who I am.” Joy can teach me all day, but she is passing on to me who she is in Jesus. He must increase, but I must decrease (Jo 3:30). This by no means implies we become the same person.
