Chapter Six - Lessons Learned

“I abide in Jesus. I’m the branch growing from the Vine, which is Jesus, and He, Himself flows through me. And when I speak to the Father, He sees me as He sees Jesus. That’s the way I learned to pray when I understood who I was in His sight, and here I am because of Him. When you are actually awakened to the fact that the Life of the Vine is in you, what happens is that it becomes a healing flow. It’s a renewing flow, an understanding flow that keeps me safe. I understand who I am, because I know Who is in me. Anyone can have this; it doesn’t matter who your earthly father is.”

5. Listen with my heart

For I said in my haste, “I am cut off from before Your eyes;”nevertheless You heard the voice of my supplications when I cried out to You (Ps 31:22).

God heard the cry of David’s heart. I had to learn to listen with my heart. As silly as this sounds, trusting God to a greater degree helped me be a better listener. Turning things over to Him emptied me of my own agenda. Trusting Joy took time as our friendship deepened.

The safer I felt with Joy, the more I emptied myself of my own agenda, opened up to her, and let her in. As I let her in, I listened more with my ears and less with my own thoughts and perceptions. As I did this with her, I did this with my own loved ones and friends.

Joy would always say, “listening felt like love.” She felt validated, and this is what I have learned to do in my own life. Joy was never afraid to hear anything I had to say.

One day I called her, so angry with myself and heartbroken over something I had done. I can’t remember what it was, but I remember the result of talking with Joy and emptying my soul to her.
